The tokens stay yours and come back to your wallet when the timer ends; you just can't sell them while they're locked. The ladder rewards that commitment while it lasts. Burning means destroying tokens forever — they leave your wallet, leave the total supply, and can never come back. It's the strongest signal there is, so burned credit counts at full weight permanently, even if you sell everything else later. Locks are the reversible way up; the pyre is the permanent one.
